In February 2017, we found Steven, a ten year old mentally handicapped child. He had five other siblings, all healthy. As in many situations, the mother really didn’t know what the problem was, only that her child could not speak and did not recognize her or any family member. Because of hunger, Steven had been found eating the foam rubber mat he and mom sleep on. When he was one year old, Steven developed cerebral malaria and what mom was told at the time was meningitis. His spine was drained of some fluid in a local hospital and that is when his condition deteriorated even more. Mom took him to a school for the mentally disabled but the cost was close to $200 a year so he never attended. He had no control of his bowels and toileting was an issue.
With the help of American donors Joyce and Norb, we provided food and looked into the school for mentally disabled.
Here is Steven today, visiting the O Center before beginning the second term at a new school. Thanks to all!
